Dog Days of Summer

The Dog Days of Summer can provide lots of fun times for you and your dog but did you know with this wonderful weather comes a unique set of possible health hazards and risks? Seasonal health hazards during extreme temps of not only summer, but also winter, should always be considered when keeping your pets safe. Knowing what the risks are will help you better understand how to manage them for the safety of your dog.

Common summer health hazards for dogs:

1. DEHYDRATION: Keep your dog hydrated by offering plenty of cool, clean, fresh water. You can also offer a cool treat by using low sodium chicken broth or yogurt and freezing them into ice cubes. Always keep your dog hydrated.

2. BURNS: Believe it or not, your dog can also get a sunburn! If you're taking your precious pup to the beach, lake, camping, or just spending the day outdoors, it is a great idea to apply a pet appropriate sunscreen. (Available through our online store!) You also want to keep those paw pads protected! Hot sand, asphalt, and cement are culprits in 1st and 2nd degree burns on those precious paws. Keep in mind, if you wouldn't go barefoot on these areas, neither should your dog.

3. PARASITES: Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These pests can create minor irritations to major life threatening conditions to your dog. Having a STRONG immune system will generally make your dog more resistant to a parasite infestation. You can start building his immunity by feeding your dog a high quality diet, one that does not have yucky preservatives, chemicals, or artificial ingredients. There are many ways to prevent these parasites from getting to your pet; Seresto Flea/Tick Collars (available through Woody's online,) is a great option, there are also repellent shampoos, and for the ones who prefer the natural approach - essential oils.

4. HEAT STROKE: Heat stroke is a very serious health risk o your dog, and in worst case scenarios, it can cause death. The easiest ways to prevent heat stroke is to restrict your pet's exercise during the hottest hours of the day and also making sure he is always hydrated. Make sure there are shady spots for your dog to relax or use cooling mats, (yup, you guessed it - also available through our online store!) NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave your dog unattended in the car during the summer heat.

Always remember, if you're hot then I can promise you, your dog is also hot. Stay Cool and keep your dog safe and happy during the summer months!
